The Naked Stage Play Reading of 'Proof' at The Ross School
“Proof,” the 2001 Pulitzer Prize-winning play by David Auburn about a brilliant but unstable mathematical genius, his daughters and his student, is being presented as a play reading by The Naked Stage and the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons on Sunday, December 6, at 3 p.m. at the Ross School in East Hampton. The question of who wrote a new prime number theorem is the driving force of the play.
Produced on Broadway in 2001, the play won the Tony Award, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award for Best Play that year. The 2005 film of the same name starred Anthony Hopkins, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jake Gyllenhaal and Hope Davis.
Naked Stage lead artist Joshua Perl describes the play as “a wonderful magical tale of madness, genius and chauvinism in the world of high stakes mathematics.” After the reading, the audience is invited to discuss the play and the role of women in math and science with a panel including Mr. Perl, science writer Dava Sobel (Galileo’s Daughter, Longitude) and Lehman College Graduate Center mathematics professor Dr. Linda Keen. Students are particularly invited to attend this event.
“The League is pleased to team up with Naked Stage to bring you this marvelous play,” said Judi Roth, a vice president of the League, who is also active with The Naked Stage. “Pulitzer Prize winning plays have a way of engaging people’s minds and hearts, and ‘Proof’ is no exception.”
The drama will unfold on the lecture hall stage in the Ross School’s Senior Building, located on the left at 9 Goodfriend Drive, off Route 114. General admission, which includes refreshments, is $15, $10 for senior citizens, and $5 for students. A raffle will also be held. Proceeds from the event benefit both The Naked Stage and the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons.
